Amethyst Place is a drug treatment facility for women and children, but two metro women say they moved out because of the mice.

Jamesette Martin told 41 Action News she moved out after 6 months because of mice.

"I was technically homeless and I didn't have a place to go.  And they lovingly opened their arms to let me come in." said Martin.

And she's not alone.

Mary Harris earned her GED and lived at the facility more than 2 years before getting out on her own.

"The holes in our walls from the mice were everywhere. She had an exploded mouse in her daughter's closet." said Harris.

The 38 apartments in Amythist Place near 27th and Troost are given to mothers who are battling drug and alcohol addictions.

Kimberly Davis is the executive director of Amethyst Place. Since opening in 2000, it has served over 700 women and children who were torn apart by drug and alcohol addictions.

"A lot of these woman have a lifelong history of substance abuse, mental illness. 90 percent of the women here are dually diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder and a mental illness." said Davis.

Davis would not discuss the complaints launched by her former clients. She said they have seen and do treat for mice in the 100-year-old building. She said they've never had a mouse infestation.

Angela Bailey has lived at Amethyst Place for over 2 years.

"It's a very clean place. We have weekly inspections. Also monthly inspections. And it has to be very clean for those inspections or you don't pass." said Bailey.

Inspections that didn't hit the mark for Harris and Martin, who have both left the program.

"My recovery is going good. I go to three maybe four NAA meetings a week. I meet with my sponsor once a week sometimes more." said Harris.

Amethyst Place has a 60 percent graduation rate which is above the national average for substance abuse treatment programs.
