Father Scott Kallal, who was suspended from his position at a local church after allegations of wrongdoing, is charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

According to the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office, the alleged incidents occurred in the summer and fall of 2015. The investigation is ongoing.

Kallal, 35, was taken into custody by law enforcement in Maryland on Monday, July 24. Maryland State Police confirmed to 41 Action News that Kallal is in custody at the Montgomery County Jail in Maryland. He is being held on fugitive from justice charges.

The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas said Kallal agreed to undergo an evaluation and counseling, for which he arrived in Maryland on May 30, 2017.

Barbara Dorris, managing director of the Survivor’s Network of those Abused by Priests, said, "It's troublesome in that the predator and the church are making the decisions on how the investigation will be handled. It's going to be very difficult to investigate, to talk with the person who's been accused of committing these crimes if they have no access to him."

The Archdiocese of KCK announced on July 18 that Kallal was suspended from his position at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Overland Park after two sources came forward with allegations of wrongdoing. The archdiocese said a preliminary investigation revealed “violations of some of the Archdiocese’s safe environment guidelines, which all clerics, employees and volunteers are asked to observe when interacting with young people.”

A man who claims his daughter was sexually assaulted by Kallal alleged Kallal inappropriately touched his 11-year-old daughter during a gathering at St. Patrick Catholic Church in 2015.

A day after the archdiocese announced Kallal’s suspension, the KCK Police Department confirmed it was investigating the case.

Dorris added, “The story isn't making sense. Why is there a two year lag in this investigation?"

The Archdiocese of KCK said in a statement it will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement as the matter moves forward.
