A new addition to a Leawood neighborhood didn’t receive a warm welcome from more than 80 neighbors.
A new homeowner to the Leawood South subdivision added a six-foot tall wooden fence. Her property sits next to the ninth hole of the Country Club of Leawood. Neighbors and golfers are not happy.
“You drive around the neighborhood and you walk along the back and nobody has a tall fence,” said neighbor Nancy Gleason.
The fence was built last week. Just a few days ago, someone sprayed hot pink paint on the side. A police report was filed with Leawood police, but the department has no suspects at this time.
“I suspect the golfers now have an issue with their beautiful neighborhood course has a tall fence to obstruct views and now has bright pink spray paint,” said Gleason.
Some neighbors believe the six-foot tall fence is not part of the homeowner rules. According to the city, if you have a pool, you can have the fence.
HOA President Dennis Smith is trying to figure out the exact rules before moving forward.
"When you put a pool on a golf course lot, our restrictions say you cannot have a fence, but if you have a pool, you have to have a fence per the city code, and so she's got a pool permit," he said.
Smith said the conversation will continue. He feels sorry for the new homeowner and for the neighbors adjacent to the property, who are upset with their obstructed view.
Gleason hopes the fence will go down.
“It’s going to be interested to see. I know there are a lot of unhappy, a lot of unhappy folks."
