KCK wants to hire 15 unlicensed teachers

On Tuesday, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools asked the Kansas State Board of Education if it can hire 15 new unlicensed teachers.

In a 9-1 vote Tuesday morning, KCK Schools won approval to hire unlicensed teachers.

Last year, six districts in Kansas were allowed to do so, including KCKPS and the Blue Valley School District.

In order for someone to teach in the district without a license, they would need to have at least a bachelor's degree.

Some of the unlicensed teachers currently involved have taken some graduate classes for a master's degree.

Supporters said it helps schools to fill vacancies in science, English and computer science.

School officials tell 41 Action News anyone who would be hired would go through training and an extensive background check.
