The Piper School District is offering counseling at two of its elementary schools after a Kansas City, Kansas, police detective was shot and killed Monday.
Detective Brad Lancaster’s two young children are in the third and fifth grade at East and West Elementary Schools. Those schools will have counselors there Tuesday.

“We’ve had our students upset. They’re students who are in the children’s classroom, who are the daughters of the victim. There are staff members directly associated with the students,” said Tim Conrad, Piper School District Superintendent.

Conrad also said Piper is a tight-knit community and that people who work for the KCK Police and Fire Departments must live in Wyandotte County. He said many of them choose to live in Piper.
“We have a lot of staff in the district that are affiliated with public safety,” Conrad said.
The superintendent said Lancaster’s death is a significant blow and that it’s important children have someone to talk to.
“We are providing this service to make the best during this difficult time,” Conrad said.
The district said anyone who needs to talk is welcome to see the counselors on site Tuesday.
