A dog died in a house fire in Overland Park Thursday morning.

Just before 10:30 a.m., crews from Overland Park and Consolidated Fire Dist. #2 responded to a house fire in the 8400 block of West 71st Street. According to a news release from the Overland Park Fire Department, the fire was reported by someone who noticed smoke while driving by the house.

The first units on the scene reported smoke showing from a single story, single family home. The news release said firefighters entered the house and searched for residents while additional crews attacked a fire in the kitchen.

No residents were found, but a dog was deceased in a front bedroom.

The Overland Park Fire Department said the fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes.

Fire damage was contained to the kitchen and living room area with significant smoke damage throughout the house.
