Overland Park police are on the lookout for a man they said tried to lure a 12-year-old girl to his car Friday morning.
The girl was waiting for her bus around 7 a.m. at 140th and Metcalf when she said a man pulled up in a silver SUV.
According to police, the man, in his late forties, asked the girl to come toward his vehicle. When she refused, he then asked for directions to Oklahoma.
The girl ran back home, where her parents alerted the police.
The suspect is described as a white man with a grey-brown beard, wearing a tan muscle shirt and jeans.
The child also noticed a black sticker of a dog, similar to a Maltese breed, on the back window.
Police have a picture from surveillance cameras that shows a similar SUV in the same area at the same time the incident happened.
The Blue Valley School District immediately sent out an alert to its schools and will have extra police patrolling in the area.
School officials and police said the girl did exactly what she should have.
Anyone who has seen a similar car or has other information is asked to contact Overland Park Police at 913-895-6300 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
