Video obtained by 41 Action News confirms a viewer tip that mold developed along at least one wall at the Grandview Price Chopper on West Frontage Road.
Price Chopper released a statement:
"During remodeling construction of the Grandview Price Chopper, mold was discovered on the walls. We have worked with the Health Department to conclude the situation is under control, and the store can remain open while we take care of the issue. Safety of our customers and staff is a top priority, and this situation is being taken care of as we speak."
Price Chopper says in an update that all of the mold is gone and air tests for mold are negative. 41 Action News has not been granted access to independently confirm the mold is no longer on the walls.
What are the health concerns?
The Jackson County Health Department says individuals with chronic illness are at a higher risk of infection, while others may experience eye irritation and nasal stuffiness.
“Severe reactions could include shortness of breath, wheeziness and also lung infections could occur with people that have asthma or COPD," said Jackson County Health Department Executive Director Bridgette Casey.
Mold, like the type that shows up in bathtubs and showers, slowly grow before being visible to the eye.
"It can grow in warm, damp and moisture humid environments," said Casey.
How do you get rid of mold?
A combination of bleach and water is the best way to get rid of mold, according to Casey.
"It's one cup bleach to one gallon of water," said Casey, who adds gloves and a mask are recommended when scrubbing.
