Independence police investigate suspicious device outside home

UPDATE 7 P.M. 7/25/2017: Independence police say the suspicious device found in someone's yard was not an explosive. 

Officials did not say what the device is but say the area is safe.

A man called police at 3:35 p.m., saying he found a suspicious device in his yard in the 10300 block of East 9th Street South. 

East 9th Street was shut down between Ash Ave. and Fairview while police investigated. It has been re-opened.

Police told nearby homeowners about the investigation, but there is no evacuation at this time.
