A Lee's Summit police officer passed away early Saturday morning after losing his fight with cancer.

Detective Shawn Rath, 44, was a ten-year veteran of the department who lost his battle with cancer in the early morning hours of August 26th.

Detective Rath served in the military and law enforcement for over 20 years combined.

The police department posted the announcement along with a picture of Rath on their Facebook page.

This is the second loss for the department this week. Officer Thomas Orr was killed Sunday night in a shooting in Westport. He was off duty when he was shot and killed outside Californos.

That investigation is still underway, and no arrests have been made.
