Liberty building to be demolished Friday morning

Excavation of the collapsed Bedinger building on the Liberty Town Square has been pushed back again. The city is now hoping for the removal process to begin around 8 a.m. Friday.

City spokeswoman Sarah Cooke said engineers want more shoring on surrounding buildings before they get started. They are also waiting on more heavy equipment, including a crane, expected to arrive by Friday morning.

Once crews get started, the process will be very long and surgical in an attempt to avoid further damage to neighboring buildings.

"Structural engineers are trying to determine integrity of the walls that abutted the building that collapsed. And determining what kind of shoring needs to be done on those walls," said Liberty Mayor Lyndell Brenton.

"We know that the walls that were adjacent to the collapsed building have moved," he said.

The cause of Tuesday's collapse is still unknown. However, the 1880s building was undergoing a near $600,000 interior/exterior renovation, with businesses set to move in by late July.
