Demolition continues for building in Liberty

Posted

Crews continued demolition work in downtown Liberty Monday morning after a building partially collapsed nearly a week ago.

Liberty public relations manager Sara Cooke said crews will work as long as it’s not storming. She described the debris removal as methodical and said the crews’ safety and preserving nearby buildings are the city’s top priorities.

A crew member removed loose bricks from the front of the building, and crews plan to cut the roof free for removal.

Some business owners think the construction is affecting the traffic flow and severely limiting parking.

“Who it really is going to inconvenience is the courthouse. They do a lot of business on Mondays and Wednesdays. Those days the parking spots are usually taken,” said Kevin Baldwin, an attorney at Baldwin and Vernon.

Cooke said a $5 million renovation of the downtown is planned for a few weeks.
