We're seeing more and more instances with the FBI using social media to tackle criminals. Here are a few examples:
- The bureau and the Center For Missing and Exploited Children teamed up with Facebook for AMBER Alerts.
- In December when there were two threats posted on Yik-Yak, a social media gossip platform the FBI got involved.
- In Texas - once again, they investigated threats to police officers, from a man on Facebook.
So it's no wonder the FBI put in a social media request for a mapping app.
What kind of app is it?
It basically rakes social media platforms for threats, and from what we understand, it won't be for the public's use. The app could translate foreign tweets into English or look for specific words.
But the bureau isn't foreign to apps.
In 2011, they introduced the Child ID app, which helps parents provide identifiers if their child disappears.
