KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer has issued a State of Disaster Emergency declaration in response to the winter storm currently moving across the state and into the Kansas City metro area.

The declaration allows the use of state resources and personnel to help affected counties.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has reported several road closures due to low visibility along I-70 from Salina to WaKeeney.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management has received reports of cars getting stuck in the snow and those drivers leaving them to walk in the storm.

Officials reminded travelers that the safest option is to remain inside their car, as road crews may have trouble seeing people walking along the road in the low visibility conditions.

The governor’s office said Wester Energy and Midwest Energy are reporting power outages across several counties, including some in northeastern Kansas. As of noon Sunday, restoration times for those outages were unknown.
