By 2020, Kansas residents will need to update their driver’s licenses to a new design announced Thursday by the Kansas Department of Revenue.

Residents who provide social security documentation, their birth certificate, or valid U.S. Passport will be able to obtain the federally compliant “REAL ID.” This identification will allow holders to travel domestically or visit certain federal facilities as of Sept. 2020.

Residents who do not possess those documents can receive a new ID card that will be eligible as a state driver’s license or ID card but will not be a federal ID.

The Federal REAL ID cards will be designated by a gold circle with a white star inside.

The state is hoping that by starting in 2017, residents will have plenty of time to obtain a new license.
