More than 2.4 million gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into the Kansas River Tuesday night as a result of heavy rainfall and mechanical failure at a pump station, according to a press release from the City of Topeka.
"Once notified of the issue, our staff responded immediately to address the overflower," said Sylvia Davis, director of Topeka Water Pollution Control. "Staff's response helped to minimize the overflow and kept a bad situation from getting worse."
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment indicated there is no need for a public advisory for the overflow and that downstream water systems have been notified, according to the press release.
The city of Topeka will continue to sample and monitor the condition of the Kansas River in the coming months.
