1 person killed after tornado blows through Perryville, Missouri

One person was killed Tuesday night after a strong tornado ripped through east Missouri. 

The National Weather Service reported considerable damage in Perryville, which is about 80 miles south of St. Louis. 

According to the Perry County Fire Chief, several vehicles were blown off Interstate 55 during the storm. 

Police confirmed two deaths on I-55 after the tornado rolled through. The other death was reported in Ottawa, Illinois. 

 A spokesperson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the highway was closed in both directions due to the damage.

The tornado was first spotted around 8:20 p.m. Several homes were completely destroyed by the storm. 

Search and rescue teams have been dispatched to the area to help with the situation.
