KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs made a late-season addition to the defense Monday afternoon.

According to multiple reports, the Chiefs claimed defensive end Terrell Suggs off waivers. He was released last week by the Arizona Cardinals.

Suggs, 37, a likely future Hall of Fame pass-rusher, had 37 tackles with 5 1/2 sacks and four forced fumbles this season with the Cardinals.

He is best known for his 16 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, and speculation was rampant that he hoped to return.

The NFL waiver claim system essentially goes in draft order based on the standings in a given week, so Kansas City (10-4) was able to put in a claim before Baltimore (12-2).

Now, the only team Suggs can play for the remainder of the 2019 season is Kansas City. He also may elect to retire.

Suggs racked up 132 1/2 sacks and seven Pro Bowl honors in Baltimore, helping the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII after the 2012 season. His 138 total career sacks rank ninth in NFL history.

ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates reported that the Chiefs made room on the 53-man roster by placing defensive end Alex Okafor on injured reserve.

Okafor suffered a chest injury early in the Chiefs' 23-3 win Sunday over the Denver Broncos.

The move, which bolsters a pass rush in need of it with Emanuel Ogbah also sidelined for the season, prevents Suggs from reuniting with Baltimore.

The Ravens are likely to be the top seed in the AFC when the playoffs start.
