KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes skipped the postgame news conference Sunday because of a family emergency.
His girlfriend, Brittany Matthews, later posted on Instagram that her stepfather had died following a medical incident at Arrowhead Stadium.
Matthews said in her post that she rushed to the front entrance of the stadium after learning that her stepfather had passed out.
“He did not come back from this and he was called to heaven today!” Matthews wrote on Instagram. “I KNOW 100% he is so happy up there with his kids looking down on us cheering loud that his Chiefs won today!”
In her post, Matthews thanked people for their prayers and support.
Mahomes set another record Sunday, throwing two touchdown passes during the Chiefs' 26-14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The second touchdown pass sent the first-year starter past Hall of Famer Len Dawson’s franchise single-season touchdown record. Mahomes has 31 touchdown passes for the season with six games left to play.
