KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As major college conferences continue to evaluate the effect of the coronavirus pandemic, other conferences and schools are delaying or postponing fall sports.

The America East Conference Friday became the latest conference to announce fall sports would be canceled this year.

The Kansas Jayhawks football team was scheduled to kick off their season on Sept. 5 against the New Hampshire Wildcats of the America East Conference.

Head Coach Les Miles said while he's disappointed, he understands and supports the decision.

“We are disappointed to hear that we will be unable to play New Hampshire on September 5th to kick off our 2020 season. I fully support Jeff Long and the Big 12 Conference as they continue to explore our options for the fall season and look forward to adding a new opponent to our schedule," Miles said in a statement.

It’s not immediately clear if the game will be rescheduled.

The Big 12 Conference has not made any changes to its fall sports calendar, though other major conferences have announced delays in certain sports or announced that non-conference games in football would not be played.

Director of Athletics Jeff Long said the school is exploring other options.

"KU, along with the Big 12, are continuing our efforts to play a full non-conference and conference football schedule this fall. We have begun exploring all opportunities to fill the opening on our schedule that was created by New Hampshire and will provide an update when available," Long said in the statement.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
