Bishop Seabury gets little attention in the basketball landscape around Kansas. Even in Lawrence, the Seahawks don't get as much attention as the other larger public schools.
But, senior point guard Mikey Wycoff is helping to change all of that.
The 5-foot-11-inch 160-pound standout had a great showing at the Championship Showdown basketball tournament at Shawnee Mission East High School.
Wycoff averaged 26 points per game and shot 60 percent from the floor. He also had 19 points against Shawnee Mission West, 33 points against St. James Academy and 27 points against Shawnee Mission East.
His performance earned him the Hy-Vee 41 Five-Star Athlete of the Week. Wycoff was certainly thankful for the honor.
"[It] feels pretty awesome," Wycoff said. "Knowing that I'm not from the Kansas City metro area, but from right here in Lawrence, Kansas, I'm happy to be the chosen one."
Despite coming from a small school, Wycoff knows he can still perform.
"I knew that it was going to be a really big stage," Wycoff said. "A lot of people always tell me like, 'Hey, you go to a 2A school. But, you have like really good talents. And, you gotta just stay aggressive.' So, coach Battles told me like, 'Man, go out there and be aggressive. Show them that you're a dog and that you can hang with these boys.'"
Seahawks boys basketball head coach Ashley Battles believes that Wycoff stood up to the challenge of playing in front of a big stage at the Shawnee Mission Invitational Tournament.
"Going in playing Shawnee Mission West, St. James Academy and Shawnee Mission East was just really huge for him cause he wanted to show everybody that not only could he show out, but our team could show out."
Wycoff also gets the stamp of approval from his teammates.
"Mikey, in my opinion, is the best player in the state hands down," junior point guard Zach McDermott said. "He knows there's nights where he might not be feeling as hot as someone else. And, he's unselfish enough to know when to feed the other players on the team, but at the same time stay aggressive."
Bishop Seabury feels they have what it takes to make a run at the state championship and win it all.
"Our goal is definitely to win the state championship," Battles said. "But ultimately, our goal is just to be the best team we can be night in and night out."
"Oh man, I think we can get the title honestly. We're a bad team," Wycoff said. "I just saw it this past weekend. We can hang with the big guys. So, it's gonna be tough for the 2A teams to handle us."
NOTE: The Hy-Vee 41 Five-Star Athlete of the Week segment airs every Thursday night during the 10 p.m. sportscast for the entire school year.
