Two high-powered teams faced off in the 2016 Championship Showdown Tournament Semifinals at Shawnee Mission East.
Bishop Seabury (Kansas Class 2A #2) faced St. James Academy (Kansas Class 5A #3) in the Hy-Vee Big Game Matchup. St. James Academy pulled away at the end of this hotly contested matchup beating the Seahawks 85-63.
St. James Academy received major contributions from Zach Thornhill who scored a team-high 24 points. Keenan Fitzmorris was a big factor on both ends of the floor with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks. Will McKee was the only other person for the Thunder in double figures scoring with 14 points.
Bishop Seabury had been previously unbeaten. Standout senior guard Mikey Wycoff kept his team in the game with a game-high 33 points. He was able to slash towards the cup creating easy opportunities for himself and getting to the free throw line. Wycoff made 7 out of 10 free throws. But it wasn't enough as the Seahawks took their first loss of the season. Zach McDermott scored 17 points in the losing effort.
They will play in the Championship Showdown 3rd Place game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Shawnee Mission East. The Thunder will move on to Saturday's Championship game where they'll face senior point guard Jacob Gilyard and The Barstow School Knights at 5 p.m. The Knights defeated host school Shawnee Mission East in the other semifinals game 59-41.
