KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With the top seed and a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs locked up, the Kansas City Chiefs plan to start Chad Henne at quarterback in Sunday’s season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Coach Andy Reid made the announcement Wednesday during a videoconference with reporters.

Reid also said it was likely that quarterback Matt Moore, who started two games for the Chiefs in 2019 with Patrick Mahomes and Henne hurt, would serve as Henne’s backup.

Henne hasn't started a game since 2014 when he played for Jacksonville. He is 18-35 in his NFL career as a starter, including a 13-18 record with the Miami Dolphins from 2008-11 and a 5-17 record with the Jaguars from 2012-17.

He signed with the Chiefs before the 2018 season, appearing in one game that season. He missed 2019 with an ankle injury.

Henne, a 2008 second-round draft pick by Miami, has appeared late in blowouts during two games this season, completing five of six passes for 30 yards in 2020.

During his 13-year NFL career, Henne has thrown 58 touchdowns and 63 interceptions.

The announcement means Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, will finish the season with 4,740 yards passing, 38 touchdowns and six interceptions. He attempted a career-high 588 passes, including a career-best 390 completions and currently leads the NFL in passing yards.

Houston's Deshaun Watson currently ranks second in passing yards with 4,458.

Reid indicated that he planned to rest some other starters as well.

“They all want to get in and go, but that’s a decision I had to make,” Reid said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
