The Great Plains SPCA is hosting an adoption drive this Thanksgiving weekend.
With more than 1,000 pets to choose from, the facility is waiving all adoption fees.
“When we have an opportunity like this to let animals out into good homes, it opens up kennels to let more pets in,” SPCA spokesman Jacob Meyer told 41 Action News. Owning a pet, personally is one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
Pet ownership can also be a great responsibility.
This is the time of year many people give pets as gifts.
It’s also the time of year, you see more stray and homeless animals.
“A lot of stray animals we pick up off the streets, you can clearly tell they’ve been adopted at one time, “Meyer said. “And we often just figure they were unable to take care of them.”
It’s estimated thousands of stray and abandoned pets are in the Kansas City metro area.
Before you adopt a pet, experts say consider costs for yearly vaccinations, medical expenses and food.
It could cost you hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars a year.
