With her design, KU student Rebekah Winegarner hit just the right note: a grand idea for a grand piano that won an international design competition.
"I was pretty excited," said Winegarner.
The Overland Park native spent weeks working on it, sometimes up to 18 hours a day.
"The initial design was going to be steam-bent wood, kind of emerging from a set of keys," said Winegarner.
But she eventually decided on another design, one that may look oddly familiar to college students.
"It's kind of funny because I drink not that much," said Winegarner.
Yes, her design features the look of beer.
"It was a little bit funny being the student out of the class to have used beer, but yes, I get the irony being a college student and using beer," joked Winegarner.
There really isn't a prize for winning the contest, known as Roland's Digital Grand Piano Design Competition, but the industrial design major says it will look very good on her resume.
"As I'm looking for jobs, being able to put international design competition winner, you know, really helps me open up the door and get more conversations going," said Winegarner.
She also says she may even try to build the piano one day.
