There are extreme workouts that put your body through the rigors of intense cardio and strength training; but my workout with the Adventures in Learning group at the Shepherd's Center at Central United methodist Church in Kansas City, Mo., had strength training and some cardio at a much slower pace.

Adventures in learning is a national program for mid-life and older adults who want to continue learning about community and make new friends. They have speakers on art, travel and health. Exercise is another component of their activities.

I was invited to the class in February. Instructors Mary Lou Snyder and Anne Massa are volunteer exercise instructors. Snyder teaches Line Dancing.  Massa teaches Sit and Be Fit.

I had a great time. Students and the instructors were fun and friendly and I felt like I was with some longtime friends. Even though the pace was slower, my muscles were being worked. I would definitely return for another workout.
