The man charged in the death Captain Robert “Dave” Melton appeared in court on Friday.
Jamaal Lewis is charged with capital murder in Melton's death, along with aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a firearm into an unoccupied dwelling -- all of which are felonies.
The court took a brief break while Lewis met with his attorney, Jeffrey Dazey.
When it reconvened, Lewis was read his charges. Dazey said his client understood the charges.
A man in the court said, "I love you, son," when he was leaving.
Lewis' next court date is September 23.
Daqon Sipple, 18, appeared before the judge as well. He is charged in connection to the original call to police about a shooting before Melton’s death.
He is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and criminal discharge of a firearm into an unoccupied dwelling.
Sipple said he understood the charges and said he didn't think he could afford his $100,000 bail or an attorney.
The judge said Sipple would be appointed an attorney. His next court date is August 2.
A Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office deputy said both Lewis and Sipple are on suicide watch as a precaution.
