Suspect charged in catalytic converter thefts

A man described as a principal suspect in numerous police investigations involving catalytic converter thefts in the past several years is behind bars.

Clay County prosecutors Friday charged Jon Keith Kelley, 49, with three counts of felony tampering with a motor vehicle in connection with an incident last month in Kansas City, Mo.

Kelley and a second suspect were arrested Thursday after undercover officers with Kansas City, Mo., Police Department heard sounds of sawing and witnessed Kelley emerge from underneath four vehicles in Kansas City, Kan.

Detectives followed the pair back to his residence at 21st and Olive Streets, where a brief standoff ensued while police took the pair into custody.

Prosecutors have not announced any charges against the second suspect.
