Independence police are looking for a vehicle after a fatal shooting Friday morning.

Police responded to the shooting at 9:43 a.m. in the 16900 block of E. 41st Terrace South. Independence police said officers were responding to an unrelated incident fairly far away when they heard gunfire.

Independence police found one man in the front yard of a residence with gunshot injuries. He was transported to an area hospital where he underwent treatment. Police said he was later pronounced died. The victim was identified as David J. Duncan, 45, of Independence.

When officers arrived shortly after the shooting, they saw a a 2015 silver Cadillac XTS with the Missouri license plate HL1L5H trying to leave the area. Independence police said officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to step and fled. A pursuit ensued, and officers lost the vehicle as it traveled westbound U.S. 50 Highway, west of Unity Village.

"Right now, we are assuming the suspect is still armed. We want to be obviously very cautious, and if anyone does see the vehicle call police," Officer John Styme said. "We want to be able to get this person."

The Criminal Investigations Unit is still investigating the incident and is asking for assistance in locating the vehicle.

Independence police ask if you see the vehicle or know any information about this case to call the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7777 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
