Art and sole. That’s what this story is all about.
Vans has a contest each year involving high school artists and a blank pair of shoes. Some 3,000 schools, representing all 50 states, are in the competition this time around, including Cristo Rey High School in KCMO.
Eventually, those 3,000 schools get whittled down to the top 50. Then, the public votes online to get to the top 5. A panel of judges picks the overall winner.

That number one team of young artists will win $50,000 for their school.
As they come down to the April 10 deadline, Cristo Rey art teacher, Jacob Sharp, is always amazed by the designs the students create.
He says art teaches problem-solving, mathematics, self-expression and so much more, with this particular contest really getting them to think outside the easel.
This year they can use the shoe as their canvas to tell stories about our city and region, as well as other topics.

Bailey, a sophomore at Cristo Rey, says she was excited to have the opportunity to draw and paint on something unusual without being told to stop.
The motto for Vans is “Off The Wall.”
This competition does exactly that for wonderful works of art and, at Cristo Rey, they are stepping up to the challenge.
