A health hazard is the reason for a major reconstruction project at a Kansas City pet shelter.

KC Pet Project is quickly trying to find a home for nearly 100 displaced dogs.

"It's those drains that need to be replaced,” KC Pet Project Executive Director Teresa Johnson pointed out. “All of the drains were deteriorating to the point they were no longer effective in moving the waste through the kennels."

KC Pet Project partners with the city of Kansas City, so it was waiting on the city contractors to give the green light. Johnson knew they were on the list for construction, but wasn’t sure when.

“It's stressful, because we always have a full shelter.”

The need to help the dogs is so great, for this weekend only, you can adopt for free.

Pam and Mark Palmer are one couple that visited Friday and took home two Labs.

They’ll break your heart looking at you though their cages and their bars, wanting you to take them home, they just kind of beg,” Palmer said.

Dozens of dogs are still left.

The KC Pet Project vows not to kill, and will find a spot for the leftover dogs in the meantime. Finding them a forever home, is always the goal.

"It's always hard when you are an open admission shelter, to have to displace that many dogs at one time,” Johnson explained. “So it's really important for people to come out and help us save a life and give a dog a home this weekend.”

If you can’t adopt, fostering is always an option. KC Pet Project is looking for foster parents while the drains are under repair.

An orientation open to the public is set for Saturday at 10 a.m.

The project should take about two weeks.
