KCP&L crews have their hands full Tuesday working to restore power for thousands of people across the metro area.

Three days and counting, that's how long some residents in Johnson County have been without power.

"Our power has been out since the storm started probably, or mid storm Saturday night so we've been without," said Patty Purington, Overland Park resident.

Homes near 78th Street and Lowell Avenue in Overland Park, Kansas are just a handful left to restore.

"It's been kind of hard when you're used to air," said Purington.

"Seems like it always is the last one to get power back no matter what so we're kind of used to it," said John Horsley, Overland Park resident.

It's been all hands on deck for KCP&L crews with over 1,200 people working throughout the metro. After nearly 72 hours without electricity, homes continue to heat up.

"I'm sure it's got up to 90s, yeah, 100, yeah," said Horsley.

Residents are doing their best to beat the heat.

"We've got some coolers full of ice, trying to keep her hydrated because she's elderly, so just trying to make sure that she's okay," said Purington.

"Take the hose and hit yourself with water and go back in," said Horsley.

For most people in the affected area, they say sleeping in the heat is the hardest part.

"Brenda just said that Joey slept outside last night but no, I didn't," said Horsley.

With fingers crossed, they're hoping to have their lights back on Tuesday, but if not, they say they'll survive.

"It's hot but it's, trust me, there's other parts of the world where it's a lot worse than this," said Horsley.

"She's from the depression so she says she's used to it more than I am," said Purington.

KCP&L crews hope to have power restored to customers by Wednesday at the latest. They say most people still without electricity are serviced by transformers and wiring that's been affected by downed trees and branches.
