The calendar says February but there’s a little bit of March madness happening in town this weekend.

World-class athletes will be taking the hardwood at 68’s Inside Sports, just off 88th Street in Overland Park.

It’s the Third Annual KC Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.

Teams from around the nation will be playing hard and fast for the next three days.

Matt Bollig, Director of Basketball for Midwest Adaptive Sports and the main man behind the tourney, was paralyzed in a weight room accident during his sophomore year of college.

But, as Matt says, “Once an athlete, always an athlete.”

The first year there were only a couple of team, then the second year, four teams played.

This time around, they are looking for nearly a dozen teams traveling to Overland Park for the glory of competition.

Some of the rules are a little different, for example there is no call for double dribbling but for the most part, this is a very physical game built on fearless speed and great shots.

Chiefs Hall of Famer, Will Shields is excited to host the tournament at his work-out center and tried the game himself a few days ago.

He was extremely impressed with the athleticism of the players, not to mention their drive and inspirational spirit.

Somewhere, James Naismith is smiling.
