New businesses and a brighter future, that's the hope for a part of Kansas City some have compared to the Mason-Dixon line -- the Troost Avenue Corridor.

If you drive along Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard past Troost Avenue in Kansas City, you'll see construction trucks and a shell of a new building.

According to barbecue guru and real estate developer Ollie Gates, it'll be a McDonald's this fall.

"The newest building now going up is a McDonald's," he said. "We've been after them for the last two or three years. This national chain will add more credibility to the area."

He says Kansas City needs more investment east of Troost to revitalize the area.

He's currently looking to reoccupy the old Apple Market grocery store. Gates says a big part of his challenge is changing minds.

"If the attitudes don't change about certain portions of the city, then it's never going to develop like you want it too," said Gates.

The new McDonald's is slated to open in September.
