KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Firefighters rescued a family of three from the roof of their porch after a fire started in their Kansas City, Missouri home.

Battalion Chief Kevin Hughes said smoke detectors saved lives by waking the adults in the house, located on 37th and Agnes in East Kansas City. They grabbed their young son, officials said.

But the fire on the first floor prevented the family from leaving. Hunt said the family broke a bedroom window and waited on the roof until firefighters arrived.

KCFD used ladders to guide the family to the ground. No one was injured.

An investigator is working to determine what caused the fire near Agnes Avenue and 37th Street. There is no immediate estimate on the amount of damage the fire caused.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The fire department stressed the importance of having working smoke detectors at your home. You can pick up a working smoke detector for free from the Fire Marshal's office at Independence Ave and Woodland Avenue.
