If you live in Johnson County and noticed an increase in your home value on your letter of valuation, you're not alone.

One of the most dramatic examples is a single family home in Prairie Village, which saw an 11.9 percent increase from last year.

The Johnson County Appraiser's Office say the increase is for the high demand in the market right now, stating it's a seller's market.

People can appeal their appraisal. The Johnson County Appraisal Office says about 40 to 50 percent of property owners in the county will see a reduction via the appeal process, which will vary case by case.

“Well anytime you have prices going up on anything its always a concern,” said Kathy Johnson who lives in Prairie Village.

“The days on market is under 30 days typically and often times less than one week,” said real estate agent Marilyn Dugan.

However, there could be a downside to appealing when it comes time to sell, according to Dugan.

“It wouldn’t be uncommon to have a buyer approaching the door with the tax print out in there hand it is easily accessible on the county’s website and they might want to know why the tax value is less than the listing price,” said Dugan.

Johnson says she will not be appealing the decision.

“The rise in the real estate market will pay off eventually so because at some point I would be leaving here,” said Johnson.
