A 10-year-old Kansas City boy get his hands on a gun and shot himself in the leg early Friday morning, police have confirmed.

According to police, the boy was investigating a supposedly vacant property at 23rd and Poplar when he found a gun inside -- and a person who wasn't supposed to be there.

The rental property was undergoing renovations and should have been vacant, the property owners told police. They had a caretaker watching over the house, but couldn't reach them when they went to check on the property Friday morning.

So, they sent their 10-year-old boy through the dog door to check it out, police said.

Once inside, the boy apparently found a gun and shot himself in the leg. He's been hospitalized but is expected to survive his injuries.

The unknown person the boy saw in the home grabbed the gun and ran off the scene, per the police account. Police launched a search to track the unknown man down.

The child was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Streets in the area were closed and the investigation was ongoing as of mid-morning Friday.
