The Kansas City planning and zoning committee Wednesday approved the $75 million expansion proposal from Kansas City University.

Some neighbors testified at the meeting that they did not know about KCU's planned expansion.

Jim Wanser, a member of Historic Kansas City, objected to KCU's plan to demolish dilapidated 100-year old homes in the Colonial Courts neighborhood, to build a parking lot.

However, Jim Bowers, attorney for Kansas City University, explained that KCU is donating two historic houses to the Pendleton Heights neighborhood association and giving that same neighborhood group the land where the homes will be relocated.

"We have an agreement with the Pendleton Heights neighborhood Association to relocate two of the single-family homes on brown elm to  lots on Maple. And that will continue to preserve the residential character of Maple Boulevard on the east side of our campus," said Bowers.

The City Council will consider the KC you expansion proposal next Thursday.
