The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is investigating reports of at least 10 patrons who came down with a gastrointestinal illness after visiting a Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar in Overland Park last week.

Although this incident may appear similar to the norovirus outbreak linked to the New Theatre Restaurant, also in Overland Park, KDHE officials say there are no confirmed cases of norovirus associated with Buffalo Wild Wings, located on West 105th Street.

It is more likely that this small outbreak is a result of a seasonal illness being spread by either workers or patrons at the restaurant, said Johnson County Department of Health and Environment director Lougene Marsh in a press release.

"These types of illnesses are common this time of year," said Marsh. "Proper hand washing and staying home from school, work and public places, like restaurants, when you are ill are the best ways to prevent the spread of these types of illness. We encourage food service facilities and restaurants to take additional precautions to ensure the safety of their customers."

Health officials received reports of illness on Jan. 29 from people who became ill a day earlier. Students from the Shawnee Mission School District are among those who reported illness, according the the statement.

The KDHE and JCDHE are working with the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the City of Overland Park to determine the source of the illness.
