In order to keep people reading, the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Libraryhas set up little libraries at the five busiest bus stops in the city.

Locations of Little Free Libraries

  • Seventh and Minnesota Downtown Transit Center
  • Kansas City Kansas Community College
  • 47th Street Transit Center (Indian Springs)
  • 78th and State Eastbound stop (Walgreens)
  • Village West and Parallel Parkway stop (Legends Walmart)

The Little Free Libraries are stocked weekly with books and comics specifically earmarked for the project.

“People can come and they can take books, they can put books. It’s really a part of the inspiration to keep people reading and develop a love for reading,” said David Hanson, assistant director of Public Libraries at the KCK Public Library.

The goal is to spread the reach of reading into the community.

“Not everyone is going to come to our buildings and it’s up to us to go meet the patrons where they are,” Hanson said.

Having the little libraries at bus stops allows people to get a book while they wait on their commute and read it while they are traveling.

“Developing print motivation and developing that love of reading is really what we want to get across,” Hanson said.
