A Clay County man will spend 20 years in prison after he was convicted of kidnapping and raping a woman, according to the prosecutor's office.

Scott Hamm, 30, kidnapped a woman from the Target parking lot in the Northland in August 2015.

According to the probable cause statement, he first asked the woman and a man for a light for his cigarette, but they told him they didn't have one.

He then returned and asked them for a ride, but they said no.

The third time, he pulled a gun on them and told them, "This is a carjacking."

He took the male victim's cell phone and wallet and forced the woman to get in her car in the driver's seat and drive off with him in the seat behind her.

They stopped a mile away at a daycare parking lot where he told her he had just gotten out of jail for attempted murder.

The woman told police he raped her inside the car.

An officer told 41 Action News police tracked the car down in minutes using a cellphone's ping located inside the car. They found the woman and Hamm, who surrendered to police.

He originally told police he hadn't forced the woman to have sex with him, but later changed his story and said there was a five percent likelihood that she feared for her life and felt like she didn't have a choice.

He pleaded guilty in June, but tried withdrawing the plea on Thursday. The judge denied it.
