A man was found lying in the street outside an apartment complex in south Kansas City early Sunday morning.

Police were called to the sound of shots at 76th & Monroe about 6:20 Sunday morning.

Upon arrival officers found a man in the street suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

He was transported to an area hospital, but died hours later.

People who stayed at East Hills Village Saturday night woke up to crime scene tape.

"It literally scared the Hell out of me. Death nearby, I didn't expect hear this nor see," said Toya Moore, who had been with her friend Renea Williams the night before.

Williams and Moore were both crashing with a friend.

41 Action News spoke to several residents who heard gunfire.  They said the shooter stopped and started three times.

One woman said she tried to help the man who died.  She said he was shot at least four times in his back.

"You don't know which way to turn, who to trust. There's just a lot going on you know," said Renea Williams.

Police also say residents reported a vehicle drove from the area about the time of the shooting, but there's no word yet on if that vehicle may or may not be connected.

A description has not been given.
