JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) --

UPDATE 4 P.M. 8/22/2017: Missouri's Lt. Gov. Mike Parson has called for a special session to remove Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal from office.

The move comes after Chappelle-Nadal temporarily posted a social media remark hoping for President Donald Trump's assassination.

In a press release, Parson said, "It is unacceptable for a public official to call for violence against the President of the United States, and there is no place in the Missouri General Assembly for a legislator who embraces such harmful rhetoric."

In the release, Parson called the move to remove Chappelle-Nadal "nearly unprecedented" and said the Senate has not tried to remove a member from office since 1945.

Previous story: Missouri lawmakers posts, deletes Trump assassination comment

Republican and Democratic state Senate leaders on Tuesday rescinded all of the committee assignments of Chappelle-Nadal. That comes as the St. Louis area lawmaker has resisted calls to resign for posting a Facebook comment last week that said: "I hope Trump is assassinated!"

Chappelle-Nadal later deleted the statement and has since apologized. But Missouri's Republican governor and lieutenant governor have said senators should oust her from office if she doesn't resign.

She had been a member of nine legislative committees. Senate President Pro Tem Ron Richard and Minority Leader Gina Walsh rescinded those assignments.

Expulsion from office would require a two-thirds vote.
