KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Nearly 7,500 BPU customers were without power Saturday afternoon after broken transmission poles caught fire.

BPU Spokesman David Melhaff says the poles broke and caught fire about noon, which then knocked out power at a substation... which then tripped other substations down the line as a safety measure, but also increasing the initial outage.

Many of the customers effected are from 30th-55th centered around State Avenue, but other outages were reported as well.

BPU crews we called to shift the electrical load to other substations, and reduce the initial outage.

Melhaff says he hopes crews are able to get all customers back on by about 3:00 Saturday afternoon.
