LENEXA, Kan. -- In the past month, a new development in Lenexa has quickly become the heart of the Johnson County city.

The Lenexa City Center near 87th and Renner is the home of city hall, city council meetings, the Lenexa Public Market and a brand new recreation center, among other things.

The center is also seeing a spike in traffic from both pedestrians and drivers.

"We are seeing lots of awesome traffic to our facility, which we are thrilled about. We want this to be a great walkable destination for our citizens," said Becky Yocham, Director of Community Development for the City of Lenexa.

Yocham said the city is studying 87th Street right now, and they have a larger city infrastructure plan that includes adding four traffic lights on the street over the next four or so years.

All of that will be determined by traffic patterns and use.

She said as those lights come, the city will also be looking at things like lights with crosswalks.

That's something Alyssa Tinder, a nanny in the area, is looking forward to.

"I've parked across the street, and when I was getting out of my car, the cars that were speeding by weren't slowing down at all," said Tinder, who was walking to the recreation center on Wednesday with four small children.

The city said that could be because the speed limit used to be 45 miles per hour, and within the past couple years it was reduced to 30 miles per hour.

"As you can imagine, folks are used to driving through this area at a little higher speed," said Yocham.

When 41 Action News was camped out in front of the center for an hour and a half, only two people used the crosswalk. Most people parked in the permanent parking lot behind the City Center.

The police department has said they are picking up patrols in the area to monitor this.
