KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One suspect is in critical condition and three others were arrested after a chase from Kansas City, Kansas ended across the street from City Hall in Kansas City, Missouri.

“I could hear the gunshot. They were close by,” Chris Miller, who was waiting at the bus stop when chase ended, said.

According to KCMO police, KCK police said four suspects carjacked a man near 10th and State on Monday morning. The suspects were reportedly armed with a shotgun and "several" handguns.

The carjacking victim made a police report. Soon after, at about 12:30 p.m., the man saw his car two blocks away at 11th and Minnesota. He called police again and when they arrived, the carjackers took off, leading police on a chase across the river.

KCK police chased the car across the state line. KCMO police said the four suspects dumped the car on the west side of the parking garage at 11th and Grand and started running on foot.

“Kansas City, Kansas, police took two suspects into custody. KCPD took a third suspect,” KCPD Capt. Stacey Graves said.

KCMO police said the fourth suspect didn't follow a KCPD police officer's commands and was shot.

“Any time when we feel that our lives are in danger, or someone else, whether that be another person or officer, we want to stop that threat as quickly as we can,” Capt. Graves said.

That's about the time Anna Sage, who parks in the garage, started hearing the commotion.

"5 minutes after I start hearing sirens I start seeing a couple police cars," said Sage. "Some lady said it looked like a jacket on the ground and it looks like somebody got shot."

Miller said he could hear the gunshots and saw the SWAT team shut down streets.

"I was actually supposed to drive today and park in that garage, and I'm glad I did not,"
 said Sage.

Sage said many coworkers called in just to ask if it was safe to come to work.

“Because this was so close to police headquarters, detectives are on scene within minute. So we’re able to start – we can start talking to witnesses, witness officers and try to collect a lot of information right then,” Graves said.

As of Monday evening, police said the suspect remained in the hospital in critical condition.
