If you haven’t watched it, you’ve probably heard of the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why.”

Now the Kansas Suicide Prevention Resource Center believes the show paints suicide in the wrong light.

The group worries the show romanticizes suicide and is trying to start a different conversation.

The center is holding a meeting at the Antioch Public Library at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The main goal is to give parents the tools they need to discuss the show, mental health and suicide with their kids.

13 Reasons Why” is a show that follows a high school girl who eventually takes her own life. She leaves a series of cassette tapes about what she is going through and how her friends led to this decision.

The center worries this could lead to teenage revenge suicide.

This is not the first time members of this community have been warned about the series. Just last week the Shawnee Mission School District sent a note home to parents telling them if their kids watch the show, they should do it together.

Here is a statement from the KSPRC:

“Given this the KSPRC feels it is important to provide parents and other concerned
adults some guidance in having conversations with their teens about the show. If they are going
to watch it, we need to talk with them about it.”
