A man and woman from Jackson County have been charged in a burglary and attack that killed a man.

Mary P. Couts and John Lane are charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and first-degree burglary, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Court documents say the victim, 85-year-old John Rector, was found in the back of his residence near Pleasant Hill suffering from trauma on the back of his head in November 2016.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said that when Couts and Lane were interviewed they blamed each other for hitting Rector in the back of the head while they said they were at his residence and burglarized it.

Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000.
