A man and woman were shot in the leg on the Plaza Saturday night. Police are closing roads near 47th and Broadway as they look for suspects.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 7:48 p.m. The injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

41 Actions News spoke with four witnesses who said that a big fight between teenagers started in front of IT’SUGAR, a candy store. They said the fight actually went into the store at one point and managers had to escort them out. Just seconds later, gunshots were fired down the street.

Meredith Keeler, the general manager of Country Club Plaza released the following statement:

“Police and security responded immediately and are now actively investigating the incident. We are fully cooperating with the Kansas City Police Department, but have no further information to provide as this is still an ongoing investigation.”

Mayor Sly James also issued a statement:

“Tonight I have mixed emotions. I’m thankful that the victims from tonight’s shootings are not suffering from life-threatening injuries and that no additional bystanders were hurt. However, I’m angry that gun violence continues to shatter lives in all parts of our city, whether it be on the Plaza or at 44th and Montgall, where I grew up. We must send a message to those individuals whose use of guns to diminish the safety of all of our neighborhoods. Let’s bring this person to justice quickly by calling the tips hotline,816-474-TIPS, if you have any information that could help.”

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
