Union Station is becoming more energy efficient and it will save the famous landmark operating expenses.

About a year ago BCS Performance Solutions helped Union Station make updates to its power system – this includes lighting, electric and in the chiller room.

Now, the results are coming in and Union Station is consuming 16 percent less power than it did the previous year.

In fact, KC P&L awarded Union Station a grant of more than $700,000. That means the renovations will pay for themselves in four years.

Union Station is more than 100 years old. Its last power operating system was about 20 years old.  Now the system is electronic and web based. In fact, changes can be made right from the engineer’s phones.

Union Station has decreased it's energy footprint by a total of 2,811 metric tons of carbon dioxide - that's the equivalent of 15 railcars of coal burned!

The Kansas City Industrial Council awarded the Station one of only 12 Sustainability Awards.

The savings will be about $200,000 a year after the project pays for itself.
